Breast augmentation, also known as breast implantation or augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that aims to enhance the size of a woman’s breasts with the help of implants filled with silicone gel or saline. This procedure is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries and is known to have a high success rate.
Breast augmentation is usually carried out on women who want to achieve better proportions and enhance their appearance. Another reason to go in for breast augmentation is when a person wants to correct asymmetrical breasts (where one breast is larger or smaller than the other).
There are significant benefits to having this procedure done. Patients can enjoy having a better figure, fitting better into clothes/swimwear, and retaining youth and beauty. Breast augmentation is also a permanent enhancement solution.
WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION?
The following types of women may be ideal candidates for the breast augmentation procedure:
- Women who feel that their breasts are too small
- Women who feel self-conscious about dressing in short tops, swimwear, or form-fitting clothes
- Women with asymmetrical breasts
- Women who feel that their breasts have become less firm or smaller after having children
- Women who have a small bustline
- Women who have small breasts as a result of weight loss
Other than the above-mentioned considerations, a positive attitude and good health can go a long way in making the procedure highly successful.
THE BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE AND WHAT TO EXPECT
For your breast augmentation procedure, anesthesia will first be administered. After this, your surgeon will make an incision. There are several options for incision placement, including in the breast fold (inframammary), in the armpit (
Once the incision is made, your surgeon will then lift the breast tissue and create a pocket in the area below the breast tissue. The implant will be carefully positioned
The placement of your breast implants in relation to your breast tissue will have a lot to do with your surgeon’s preference and your anatomy. Generally, the implant will be placed in a pocket below the pectoral muscle. The pectoral muscle is found between the chest wall and the breast tissue. The other option is to place the implant in a pocket in the breast tissue above the pectoral muscle. This will also be discussed before your procedure.
POST-OPERATIVE CARE
After your breast augmentation procedure is complete, you will be able to return home to rest and recover. Arranging a ride home beforehand will be very important. Once you are home, you will need to avoid your typical activities for a time, especially those that are physically taxing. Staying home from work will also be necessary.
Patients wear a post-surgical bra for a time after the procedure in order to ensure that the healing tissues are well-supported. This bra also helps to minimize any post-surgical bruising and swelling.
It is extremely important that you follow your surgeon’s post-operative care directions as closely as possible. Following these instructions helps to avoid complications, offers the shortest possible recovery time, and preserves the quality of your results.
